Despite the declared ceasefire between the national government and the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army (CPP-NPA), Philippine Army 3rd Infantry Division (3ID) commander, Major General Jon Aying, said forces remain on ‘active defense’ and will be monitoring for activity, particularly on December 26, which marks the 49th founding anniversary of the CCP.
“We do not intend to attack,” he explained. “But, in case we sense that there are movements of state enemy formations, then we will not hesitate to attack.”
According to Presidential Spokesman Harry Roque, the ceasefire is set to begin at 6:00 p.m. today, December 23, and run until 11:59 p.m. on December 26. It then resumes at 6:00 p.m. on December 30 and will continue until 11:59 p.m. on January 2.
Yesterday, Police Regional Office-6 (PRO-6) said they would maintain alert readiness amid the ceasefire, with PRO-6 spokesperson, Police Superintendent Gilbert Gorero saying he believes the rebel group will adhere to the ceasefire.
Meanwhile, the NPA said they would also remain on alert throughout the holidays, as they believe the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Philippine National Police (PNP) may “take advantage of the ceasefire declaration for their own gains.”
While Roque characterized the declaration as a “gesture of goodwill,” CPP founding chairman Jose Maria Sison criticized the call, claiming the military was given the order to stand down but not the police./PLL, WDJ
