Gatuslao deflects when asked if move is ‘politically motivated’

In response to a proposal for a P10 million fountain and garden project in front of the Himamaylan City Hall, City Councilor Justin Gatuslao voiced his opposition to the budget item.
“These developments are unnecessary,” he said.
While proponents of the project say the project is for “tourism purposes,” Gatuslao replied, “I reject this fantasy that seeks to defend a proposal that can only be described as insensitive and out of touch with reality.”
He suggested funds be allocated for projects like scholarships, the construction of classrooms, access to potable water, among other items.
When pressed if his opposition is politically motivated, as it was previously reported of a supposed clamor within the city for the city councilor to seek the position of vice mayor in the next election, he said, “The question should be asked to the proponent,” referencing Mayor Agustin Bascon, his cousin.
“As local chief executive, he proposes the budget to the council,” he added. “These proposals are questionable.”
The proposed city budget is just over P625 million./DGB, WDJ
