After voter registration for the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections, which were moved from October 23, 2017 to May 14, 2018, came to a close yesterday, Bacolod City Commission on Elections (Comelec) elections officer, Atty. Mavil Majarucon-Sia, remarked on the hundreds who were lined up on the last day.
With registrations re-opened earlier this month, she noted during a radio interview with RMN-DYHB Bacolod, it has been the attitude of Filipinos to only move when it is already the deadline.
“No change, no progress,” the local Comelec official added.
She said reminders had been sent out to the public, informing them registrations were open throughout the month, including Saturdays.
Majarucon-Sia said Comelec-Bacolod had a target of around 5,000 new registered voters, however, new projections revealed they will only reach around 3,000.
The original polls were postponed after the House of Representatives voted to suspend the elections earlier this year, which was later signed by President Rodrigo Duterte in early October.
The final bill also included the holdover of all incumbent barangay officials./DGB, WDJ
