According to the most recent data from the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), the number of volcanic quakes at Mt. Kanalon continues to decline. After previously reporting 34 volcanic quakes between last Friday morning and Sunday morning, nine were recorded between Monday morning and yesterday morning.
In addition, no “degassing activity” had been observed.
Despite the reduced number of volcanic quakes, Phivolcs stated the ‘Alert Level 2’ remains in place, as volcanologists continue to study the sudden spike in the number of quakes last week.
Meanwhile, the Office of Civil Defense and the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council will be conducting a pre-disaster risk assessment on the volcano today.
“Residents and the respective local disaster management council of the LGUs (local government units) surrounding the volcano must be alert all the time,” said Negros Occidental Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) head Zeaphard Caelian.
Earlier, Phivolcs heightened the alert status of the volcano after nearly 250 volcanic quakes were recorded.
The volcano also emitted sulphur last week, forcing authorities in the town of La Castellana to suspend classes./DGB, WDJ
