Vincent Umayan of Davao City won the Team Albano I Victory Party chess tournament over the weekend in Long Island in New York.

“This victory is for my kids,” he said.

Umayan, who works as a chess instructor, took home $100 from the win.

“May pambaon na ang mga anak ko (My kids will now have pocket money),” he added.

The Commercial Chess League of New York most valuable player finished ahead of Grand Masters Mark Paragua and Oliver Barbosa and Fédération Internationale des Échecs (FIDE) Master Rico Salimbagat.

Meanwhile, his kids, Gabriel John and Samantha, will represent the Philippines in the 18th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Age-Group Open Chess Championship, set to take place from November 25 to December 4 in Kuantan, Malaysia./APV, WDJ
