Both the Negros Occidental provincial government and the Philippine Army defended the distribution of canned sardines to local soldiers returning from battling Islamic-State backed Maute terrorists in Marawi City.
Following criticism from a radio commentator and buzz on social media, 303rd Infantry Brigade (303IB) commander, Colonel Eliezer Losañes, said during a radio interview yesterday morning, canned sardines, along with pancit, are “basic component for the Philippine Army.”
He also noted, the boodle fight, held as part of the welcome home ceremony, was “merely ceremonial.”
Losañes added, the soldiers were also provided with packed lunches to bring home.
Despite the 303IB commander offering his justification, Provincial Planning and Development Office (PPDO) Coordinator Dr. Ma. Lina Sanogal said the required budget was not processed due to the All Souls’ Day and All Saints’ Day observances, adding they were provided a short period of time to plan for the event.
However, she asserted, the 31st Division Reconnaissance Company (31DRC) expressed their appreciation for the provincial government.
Meanwhile, some family and friends of returning soldiers also offered defense for the Philippine Army and the provincial government on social media, calling the lunch “pleasant.”/WDJ
