Negros Occidental Vice Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson lauded the recommendation made by incoming Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Undersecretary for Barangay Affairs Martin Diño for the establishment of freeport zones in Negros island.
In a message sent by Lacson yesterday morning, he said such a project would have a positive effect on the island’s economy and will create thousands of jobs.
“If it does happen, it would be great for Negros,” he affirmed.
Diño, formerly the chairman of the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA), recently visited Bacolod City and said he plans on making his recommendation directly to President Rodrigo Duterte.
He said the geographic location and depth of the local waters makes the area “perfect” for large container ships.
Diño noted, freeport zones need around 10,000 hectares of land, which would be fenced off, allowing for investors to set up shop in the area./DGB, WDJ
