The World Boxing Council (WBC) recently named the Games Amusement Board (GAB) of the Philippines the 2017 “Commission of the Year” during a convention in Baku, Azerbaijan.
“This is a recognition of all the hard work and dedication of the board,” said GAB Chairman Abraham Mitra.
He added, innovations made to the agency under his administration, including fostering a love for boxing, were recognized by the award.
Meanwhile, WBC President Mauricio Sulaimán requested a copy of the memorandum of agreement signed between GAB and the Department of Health, which implemented free medical check-up to professional fighters, including CT scans and MRIs, following revelations showing over 100 GAB-licensed fighters falsified medical records.
Sulaimán said developed countries should follow the same procedure.
Also present during the event were former GAB Chairman Juan Ramon Guanzon; WBC Medical Committee Vice Chair, Dr. Nasser Cruz; promoters Johnny and Liza Elorde; among others./WDJ
