Carles Mayor Siegfredo Betita yesterday clarified reports his municipality was under a State of Calamity, explaining only certain coastal communities have been placed under the condition.
With the town’s Gigantes Island currently experiencing a red tide, Barangays Granada, Asluman, Gabi, and Lantangan, which make up the island, are currently under a State of Calamity.
A red tide is caused by an overabundance of a certain algae, which can discolor the water and be toxic or harmful to people, fish, marine life, and birds.
It was previously reported, the mayor met with Iloilo Governor Arthur Defensor, Sr. and Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources-Region VI (BFAR-6) Director Remia Appari; with the governor saying the Iloilo Office of the Provincial Agriculturist and the Provincial Social Welfare and Development can provide goods and assistance, while BFAR-6 would implement a cash-for-work program./WDJ
