Ceres-Negros FC were victorious in their return to Philippines Football League (PFL) action, defeating Davao Aguilas FC, 3-1, over the weekend at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
The win put the Negrense side back into finals series qualification, sitting fourth on the league table at 28 points; 13 points adrift of league leaders FC Meralco Manila, but with three games in hand.
Ceres FC opened scoring early after striker Fernando Rodríguez successfully converted a pass from defender Jeffrey Christiaens in the 19th minute.
Davao forward Phil Younghusband nearly equalized six minutes later, however his attempt bounced out after it struck the crossbar.
Shortly after, Younghusband was presented with another opportunity to equalize, but was denied by Ceres keeper Roland Müller.
It was not until the 50th minute when Ceres midfielder Bienvenido Marañón doubled the lead.
Near the end of regulation time, Rodríguez returned the favor to Christiaens, who put Ceres up, 3-0.
Davao, meanwhile, managed to pull one back in injury time through forward Harry Sawyer.
A rematch between the two clubs is scheduled for Wednesday, September 20, at the Davao del Norte Sports Complex in Tagum City./WDJ
