Following the gold medal win by Angeline Uy Alcantara of Murcia at the recent 2017 World Cadet Taekwondo Championships in Egypt, Murcia Mayor Andrew Montelibano called on elected officials to support local athletes.
“We have a champion and this could be her shot at the Olympics,” he said. “Being able to help these athletes is like building their future.”
“There are a lot of sports that Filipinos can excel [at],” the mayor explained. “We find, given ample support, our boxing and taekwondo programs could produce a lot more.”
Meanwhile, Montelibano also expressed his appreciation to Negros Occidental Governor Alfredo Marañon, Jr. for his support for local tournaments and sporting events.
Earlier this week, the governor, alongside Vice Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson and the Provincial Board, recognized Alcantara for her achievement./JSG, WDJ
