A total 27 crew members of the vessel FB Inday Apple were apprehended off the coast of Balbagon Island, part of Carles, Iloilo, Friday morning.
The fishermen were apprehended for unauthorized fishing and for using a Danish seine, a type of fishing net used for commercial fishing, often referred to as hulbot-hulbot.
Ship captain Julie Guban and owner Leo de los Santos, both residents of Carles, face charges in violation of RA 10654, or the Philippine Fisheries Code of 1998, and Fisheries Administrative Order 246, which bans the use of Danish seine.
The Iloilo Provincial Bantay Dagat Task Force seized the wooden hull of the fishing boat with an outrigger equipped with one 6D14 Mitsubishi engine, shafting, a propeller and rudder, a mechanical winch drive, a Danish seine fishing net with floats and sinkers, two rolls of scaring lines, a tom weight (1.2 tons), 135 tubs of assorted fish, diesel fuel, kitchenware, and food provisions.
“One by one they fall,” said Provincial Administrator Raul Banias, who said the task force has a clear mission to get rid of all forms of illegal fishing at all cost.
According to Police Officer 3 (PO3) Philip Cañoso, Guban is currently under custody of the Carles Municipal Police Station, while De los Santos is still at-large./WDJ
