Former Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) chairman Monico Puentevella recently revealed his support for the government decision to withdraw from hosting the 2019 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games.
Earlier, Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) chairman William Ramirez announced the country would not host the event for security reasons and, instead, suggesting using funds devoted to the games for restoration and rehabilitation projects in Marawi City.
The former Bacolod City mayor said the administration of President Rodrigo Duterte was placed in a “difficult position” as they were hesitant to withdraw from hosting the international sporting event.
Puentevella had earlier fired back at POC President Jose Cojuangco after the latter claimed hosting the SEA Games in the Philippines could proceed without government support.
“POC, without government support, would only be dreaming of hosting the SEA Games,” remarked Puentevella.
