The Bacolod City Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP) recently approved, on its first reading, an ordinance proposing Press Freedom Day.
The ordinance, penned by City Councilor Wilson Gamboa, Jr., would designate May 3 as a day to recognize “the fundamental human right to free expression and press freedom.”
The document cites the United Nations declaration of World Press Freedom Day (WPFD) in 1993, which is celebrated on May 3.
The ordinance called the press, which it described as everything from newspaper and TV to social media and internet blogs, a “dynamic partner of government.”
An allocation of P300,000 was also requested in order to enact the ordinance./WDJ
