Around 50 social workers and house parents of the Bacolod City Social Development Center recently took part in a three-day training on case management at the MassKara Hall in the Bacolod City Government Center (BCGC).
Social Worker Beth Caumban said the training reviewed topics including at risk children and children in conflict with the law. The latter also sought to gain further knowledge of RA 9344, or the Juvenile Justice Act of 2006.
The city’s Social Development Center is located within the Bacolod City Police Office (BCPO) compound and houses around 40 to 60 youths. Many of the residents are juvenile offenders who have committed crimes including theft, robbery, and vandalism; or were disobedient to their parents.
At the center, youths are provided livelihood trainings, including jewelry making. There is also the opportunity to continue their education through the Department of Education (DepEd) Alternative Learning System.
According to Caumban, a youth center is currently being constructed to house more youths./WDJ
