Following the unanimous endorsement by mayors of the Negros Occidental third congressional district for Rep. Alfredo Benitez to run for governor in 2019, incumbent Vice Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson said he is considering a run for the same position.
Current Negros Occidental Governor Alfredo Marañon, Jr. is in his third and final term.
“It’s natural that I would be considered by the party to run for governor,” he said.
The vice governor said he would likely have his plans mapped out by October 2018, calling it “the most appropriate month to come up with a decision.”
Lacson added, third district mayors may have “lost sight,” suggesting Benitez pursue a run for Senate instead.
“We, in Negros, are excited to see the possibility of having a senator from Negros Occidental,” he said.
Earlier, Marañon said he would support Benitez’ 2019 aspirations, despite being members of opposing local parties.
