According to Edgar Salarda, president of the Panay chapter of Pinagkaisang Samahan ng mga Tsuper at Operator Nationwide (Piston-Panay), at least 97 percent of jeepney drivers took part in the two-day transport strike that ran from June 5 to 6.
Due to the protest, workers and students scrambled for transportation alternatives, which were offered by local government units and government agencies.
However, public school students who live far from their schools did not attend the first two days of the 2017-2018 academic year.
Salarda added, aside from Iloilo, 95 percent of jeepney drivers went on strike in both Aklan and Capiz provinces.
Meanwhile, Police Regional Office (PRO-6) called the strike peaceful.
“There have been no recorded incidents,” said PRO-6 spokesperson, Police Superintendent Gilbert Gorero./WDJ
