The planned transportation strike from June 5 to 6 will not stop the opening of classes for the 1.2 million students in the Western Visayas region.
“There is no postponement,” said Ma. Gemma M. Ledesma, regional director of Department of Education-Region VI (DepEd-6).
Ledesma said the transportation strike will most likely not cripple the opening of the school year in the provinces of Aklan, Antique, Capiz, Guimaras, and Iloilo.
She also pointed out, many public schools are within walking distance from the houses of students.
Meanwhile, local governments have also pledged to provide vehicles that will prioritize students.
Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog of Iloilo City, the regional capital, also reached out to other government agencies seeking alternative vehicles./WDJ
