Capitol came out with a solid second half performance to survive Blitz’s late surge in the ongoing D League-Boston Cup Basketball Tournament at the STI-West Negros University gym.
Blitz led the opening period, 18-11, behind Algin Araneta’s 8 points while Hanson Pacheco hit 4 points for Capitol.
The Capitol, however, bounced back in the second quarter with a 19-11 reversal on Roni Biri’s 7 markers and Sonny Boy Lacuesta and Herbert Ferrer’s 4 points each to book a 30-29 lead.
In the third, RR dela Cruz delivered 12 points, including a pair of triples, to spark Capitol’s 25 points while Boy Pedalino had 6 points for Blitz’s 14-point output. Capitol enjoyed a 55-43 edge going into the fourth period.
In the playoff, Blitz tried to catch up with 29 points behind Araneta’s 8 points, but Lacuesta hit 6 points of Capitol’s 20 points.
Dela Cruz and Biri scored 14 and 13 points, respectively, to anchor Capitol’s 75 points; Lacuesta added 10; and Ferrer – 8.
On the other hand, Araneta fired 16 points to lead Blitz’s 72-point output.
In the other match, the well-balanced FilSino/ESJ offense carried them to a 60-48 win over Rotary.
Luigi Porras led FilSino with 12 points; Ralph Ong – 11; Ardi Ong – 9; Richard Uy and Geraj Qui – 8 apiece.
Richard Lacson hit 13 points to pace Rotary; Rey Pandoro – 12; and Mark Cueva – 9./WDJ
