Ilahas-Bacolod took an early lead in the 2017 Philippine Open Tchoukball Invitational at the City Sports Club in the Ayala Business Park, Cebu City, winning all five of their first matches in the men’s division.
The team has accumulated 15 points after defeating Butanding-Cebu, Bunal Cebu, Philippine Christian School of Tomorrow (PCST) Royals-Manila, and Malaysia.
Taiwan, the world’s top-ranked tchoukball currently sits in second place, followed by Big City’s Manila Crickets.
Meanwhile, the Ilahas-Bacolod women’s team scored three wins, scoring nine points after defeating Butanding-Cebu, Bunal Cebu, and the Manila Crickets. The latter trails them with seven points.
“This sport is designed for Asian countries like us,” said Cebu City Councilor Joel Garganera, who believes the tournament will help boost the tourism industry. “We can excel and further promote this on the grassroots level.”
Cebu City Sports Commission chairman Ed Jayco added, “We can also use this as a tool for social transformation.”/WDJ
